Recipient of the 2014 American Prize in Orchestral Conducting, Angel Velez currently serves as Conductor of the Sol-La Academy Youth Orchestra in Santa Monica, California, on the faculties of Santa Monica College and Malibu High School, and serves as director and co-founder of the Los Angeles Film Conducting Intensive workshops with film composer/conductor, David Newman. In 2014, he was named winner of the national audition for the position of Assistant Conductor, Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra and Music Director, Cape Cod Youth Orchestra as well as serving as assistant to Kenneth Kiesler (Director of Orchestras, University of Michigan) and the California All-State Honor Orchestra.

Velez has extensive experience as an orchestral conductor, working with orchestras such as the Berlin Sinfonietta, Indianapolis Symphony, Cape Cod Symphony, Yakima Symphony Chamber, Illinois Valley Symphony, Los Angeles studio orchestras, and many others. He continues to work professionally as a conductor/orchestrator/musician in the entertainment industry on projects such as Family Guy, Jane the Virgin, James Bond: Goldeneye for Wii, Madison, Rouge Brésil, Star Wars: The Clone Wars and others.  He has held positions at Taylor University (Indiana) and most recently Marian University (Indiana) where he was the director of bands and head of the percussion program.

A devoted advocate for music education, Velez has hosted numerous masterclasses and workshops with artists such as Time for Three, Stephen Hough, Alison Balsom, Gabriela Lena Frank, Jake Shimabukuro, Kevin Kiner, Andrew Bain, James Beckel, and others. He also worked extensively in community outreach with the Consulate of Mexico (Indianapolis) in creating local performances celebrating Mexican history as well as developed strong relationships with local schools, serving as guest speaker or clinician.

Velez serves as an Associate Board Member for Education Through Music-Los Angeles, co-chair of the Education Committee for the Academy of Scoring Arts, and music consultant for the Ventura County Arts Council. He studied extensively with conducting pedagogues Donald Thulean (retired V.P., American Symphony Orchestra League) and Kenneth Kiesler, holds degrees from Butler University, Berklee College of Music, and University of Southern California.  He lives in Southern California, enjoys learning about wine and surfs every chance he gets.
