J. Kevin Lewis is the Band director at Burns Middle School in Brandon, Florida. Mr. Lewis received his Music Education degree at the University of South Florida in 1980. He has taught in Hillsborough County for 37 years and at Burns for the past 27 years. He was twice selected as teacher of the year for his school. Mr. Lewis was selected by “School Band and Orchestra Magazine” as one of 50 music teachers in the country who make a difference in students’ lives. During his tenure, Burns Middle School has received the “Florida Music Educator Secondary Music Enrollment Award” eight times. Mr. Lewis received the “Oliver Hobbs Award” from the Florida Bandmasters Association for his “consistent Superior Performances and service to the organization”.
Under Mr. Lewis’ direction the Burns Band has performed in Gatlinburg, Tenn., Atlanta, Georgia, Sea World, Walt Disney World and Universal Studios in Orlando. The band has received numerous honors in parades, festivals and at district evaluations. Mr. Lewis is a member of the Florida Bandmasters Association, Music Educator National Conference, The National Band Association and Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity.
Mr. Lewis is also the instrumental music director at First Baptist Church in Brandon, Florida.
