Patrick McLaughlin started drumming at an early age under the tutelage of Rich Hinshaw in Arizona.  Upon moving to Illinois, Patrick studied with Bret Kuhn at Prospect High School before attending the University of North Texas where he graduated with a bachelors degree in music education with a percussion concentration and a minor in psychology.

While at the University of North Texas, Patrick studied with Mark Ford, Paul Rennick, Ed Soph, Christopher Dean, Gideon Foli Alorwoyie, Jose Aponte, and Poovalur Sriji.  He studied a wide variety of music and played in a number of diverse ensembles include UNT's A-Line Drumline, South Indian Percussion Ensemble, Gamelan, Green Brigade Marching Band, Classical Percussion Ensemble, Baroque Orchestra, Brass Band, Concert Band, Afro-Cuban Percussion Ensemble, and West African Drum and Dance Ensemble.  He performed three times at PASIC during his time at UNT: twice in 2005 with UNT's A-Line Drumline and Snare Ensemble and once in 2009 with UNT's Gamelan.

In the summer of 2007, Patrick traveled to the Volta Region of Ghana with Dr. Steven Friedson and Gideon Foli Alorwoyie to study traditional West African music with the Ewe tribe. In 2009, Patrick conducted a psychology experiment with Dr. Adriel Boals that found the way a performer perceives rhythm can influence the way the play it. The study was published in the Psychology of Music Journal, one of the highest regarded music psychology journals, in 2010.

In 2011, his passion for teaching led him to create multiple online education resources for drummers including Snare Drum TV and Drumline Chops.  Both resources have been highly regarded in the community and are frequently used in classrooms and homes around the world.  Through these two resources, Patrick has helped thousands of drummers and percussionists improve their playing.

Patrick was the percussion director at West Bloomfield High School from 2012-2015. Under his direction, the ensemble was consistently competitive in WGI and became the Michigan Scholastic A State Champions in 2014.

In addition to teaching online and around the country, Patrick has also composed a variety of contemporary snare drum music. His book entitled, "The Canvas Series" is a collection of eight snare drum solos inspired by renowned artists.
